A Common mental sickness, involving body, mood, and thoughts, called Depression. It is a mental disorder which affects on thought, loss of sleep and loss of interest like eating playing and other activities.
The most common symptoms include:
Feelings of helplessness and Useless, inadequate, bad, Feeling vulnerable and being oversensitive to criticism, Loss of energy and the ability, Sudden loss or gain in weight, Sleep disruption or a need to sleep very long hours and Physical aches and pains.
Different form of Depression:
Major Depressive Disorder- It is characterized by a combination of symptoms that interfere with a person’s ability to work, sleep, study, enjoy once a pleasure activity and eat.
Dysthymic Disorder- It is characterized by long term about two year or longer, but less severe symptoms that may not immobilize a person but can prevent working generally or feeling well.
Psychotic Depression- It is characterized by some form like break with reality, hallucinations and delusions.
Postpartum Depression-It is estimated that 10-15 percent of women experience postpartum depression after giving birth, within one month after delivery.
Some form of Depression exhibited different characteristics than described above or may they developed under exceptional conditions.
The Diagnosis:
The diagnosis depends on the patient’s self-reported experiences, behavior reported by relatives or friends, and a mental status exam. There is no laboratory test for major depression.
Although physicians usually request tests for physical conditions that may cause similar symptoms. The most common time of onset is between the ages of 20 and 30 years, with a later peak between 30 and 40 years.
A variety of new drugs called anti-depressants, in recent years the market is flooded with these kinds of drugs. Other kinds of drugs also may be used to treat depression. Many found positive but some patients experience bad side effects.
Psychotherapy may uncover the reasons of depression.
In major depression disorder hospitalization may be necessary in which patient harm to self or others. People in hospital may be offered or forced to undergo electro convulsive therapy. This involves applying electric currents to the brain called electroconvulsive therapy.
